The power window is broken on the driver side of my dodge dakota 2001 truck. Sounds like it fell off the "brackets" because it sounds like the mechanism still go's up and down in the door panel but the window just falls into the door, I have to stick a piece of cardboard in it to keep it to stay up. I am a mother of two and going to school, i have no money to pay for the $500 repair that the dealership is quoting me, anyone have any suggestions??? I dont mind doing it myself, if it means saving $$.

any repair shop can repair this its the regulator that has gone bad in it,you can get a good used regulator with a motor for about 40 bucks from a salvage yard, and have it installed,it takes about an hour to install one of these total cost about 100 bucks, done a lot of those, their not bad to work on,good luck.

You have to remove the inner door panel and the handles and power buttons etc. Some of this is tricky. Before you remove it go to the auto store and buy the replacement plastic push screws that hold the panel on. You will break a lot of them removing the panel. There should be about 8 plastic push screws. Once removed look inside the door and see if the window channel ( the gasket at the base of the window where it sits in the metal track that brings the window up and down and holds the glass in the track is pulled out. If it is you have to remove the glass, realign the track gasket trim to hold the glass firmly, and set the glass back into the track with the gasket firmly holding it.) Put WD-40 or spray silicone lube in all the windows gaskets in the upper part of the door. No lube at the bottom of the window track where the gasket is. Before you reassemble it, test the window up and down several times and watch it as it goes up and down. Make sure the parts that bring the window up and down are not broken and are operating smoothly without binding in the door and all riveted or welded spots are good and not broken. If it binds lube that spot better. If it jumps out of the track again, reallign it and try again. If it jumps out again replaced the window gasket at the base of the window that holds the glass into the track. It is not that hard, just a time consuming job, and tricky to get it right. That's why they charge so much. If all that fails, bring the truck in with the panel off and the window exposed. It will save you money, and tell them you will reassemble it afterwards.

Take it to your local oil changing station. They are cheaper and folks that work inside are grease monkeys that love to tinker! They normally know cars better and are helpful! Good luck!
