Why is it bogging out?

My friend has an old Powerwagon and he's put a lot of money in it. He has a 318 and it ran okay, then he got an Edelbrock carbeurator (don't know the CFM or any specifics.) Now it runs horrible... is the carbeurator too big for the little engine? Or can it be adjusted? Or... I don't know much about mechanics... any suggestions or anything would be great. Thanks, Ryan Shaw

318. How big of an edelbrock did he put on it? Maybe getting too much fuel. Most stock 318's can only aspirate max of 650CFM.

Also. When changing to the 4bbl intake, did he get one built for a 273/318, or one built for a 340/360. The ports in the heads are different sizes on the smaller LA blocks. In my experience with these engines, Edelbrock LD4B is the best intake, or a stock single plane 273 4bbl intake. Neither are made anymore and have to find on e-bay or at swap meets.

What he might try to fix this?

Make sure was installed with a spacer gasket to the intake. While running, make sure no vacuum leaks under the hood.

Make sure idle mixture is set correctly. Ensure idle mixture is set. RPM guage needed for this.

Advance the timing a little. Advance it one degree at a time, jump in drive and test it out. Timing Light needed for this. Be sure to re-connect vacuum line back to distributer when done. Pinging means too far.

If neither of these help, Could be too big of a carb, or incorrect jetting in the engine.

Some stock 318's came with an 850 cfm thermoquad and they ran okay cfm doesn't have anything to do with the amount of fuel it means the amount of air.Edelbrock sells strip kits and they have a tuning manuel both summit racing at 1-800-230-3030 and jegs at 1-800-345-4545 have them.I have an edelbrock 750 on a 318 police engine and it works fine I did have to do some adjustments But for maximum performance I always adjust my carbs there is no such beast as the I just bolted it on and it runs perfect carb.Even if they run good they always work better when adjusted.I would recomend the strip kit then as you make the adjustments right down which jets, metering rod springs and metering rods you change. If you do that it will be easier to dial it in.Edelbrock carbs are great fuel mileage carbs.Good luck

1. Yeah it might be to big.

2. You might need to adjust the carb

3. Sometimes when you do performance mods like that you might need to adjust the timing

It needs to be adjusted. May be above your friends abilities. Take it to a mechanic.

might be that the carb isnt working right or not enough air or gas
